SLIP DRESS HISTORY
A slip dress is typically a woman’s dress that is inspired from underwear. It is traditionally cut on the bias and features spaghetti straps. Even though it resembles an ‘undergarment’, it is made to be seen and worn out. Slip dresses first became widely worn in the 1990s as part of the ‘underwear as outwerwear’ trend. They were made from layered chiffon, satin and charmeuse fabrics and often trimmed with lace. The satin dresses mirrored the minimalism of the 1990s. The slip dress became associated with the decade’s supermodels; notably Kate Moss, who garnered attention with a sheer version in 1993.

The satin slip dress style re-gained popularity starting in the late 2010s and continuing into the 2020s as part of a revival of 1990s fashion trends. Since then, slip dresses have been a red carpet staple and a major ready to wear shopping trend.
